What's In My Gear Bag 2023

What's up everyone, I wanted to share what fills my "gear bag" going into the new year!

Here is a shortcut menu for this post:

Cameras

Lenses

Lighting

Audio

Accessories

Main Camera: Sony a7r iv

Sony a7r iv

The Sony a7r iv has been my "A" camera for the last year and I couldn't be happier with it. I primarily shoot photos and the full frame 61MP Sensor allows for the highest quality image and unbeatable crop-ability. It also features 15-stop dynamic range, 14-bit uncompressed RAW images. It also captures 4K 8bit footage, which has now been beaten out by the new version a7r v. But the a7r iv gets the job done.

Backup Camera: Sony a6000

The Sony a6000 was my first introduction to Sony as I came from being a Nikon DSLR Shooter. But this little guy has a 24.3MP sensor and shoots up to 11 FPS. I still hold on to it as my "B" camera for wedding photography.

Drone: DJI Air 2s

This drone has been my favorite to own so far. The ability to capture 5k video and manual photo/video settings such as shooting in D-Log and HLG color profiles as well as adjusting the shutter speed, aperture, color temp, and format settings is what makes this drone perfect for photographers, filmmakers, and content creators. The drone also features automatic shooting modes that take over the controls and creates cinematic shots without having to do anything.

My Go-To Lenses:

Viltrox 85mm f1.8

This BEAST is my go to full frame lens for both photography and filmmaking. It has a maximum aperture of 1.8 which allows for amazing depth of field and it has incredibly quick auto focus capabilities. For only $400 it out performs its Sigma counterpart in my opinion.

Sigma 24-70 f2.8 Art

This Sigma Lens is a great alternative to the overpriced GM lens of the same focal length. This lens still packs a punch and I am able to change focal lengths on the fly.

Sony FE 50mm f1.8

The "Nifty Fifty" as its been come to be called, as each camera brand offers their own version of this go-to 50mm lens. Each at an amazingly affordable price with a maximum aperture of f1.8 you can not beat it!

Tamron 70-300 f4.5

I just purchased this lens and have not had the opportunity to use it for photography yet, but I did recently use it for video work. The only downside is the variable aperture rather than a fixed. BUT at telephoto focal lengths the compression is so tasty it doesn't have a big affect and I still consider this a good go-to for telephoto.

Lighting Panels: Neewer 660 RGB Led Video Light

My favorite thing about this panel is you can set the channel (1-8/ALL), adjust the color temperature/brightness/HSI parameters/Scenes through the button and knob on the panel with clear LCD screen or by downloading "NEEWER" APP. And if you have multiple like I do you can sync them for matching colors, moods, etc.

My Audio Recording Equipment:

Rode Wireless GO II

The Rode Wireless Lav Mic system is my go to for filming any audio whether for weddings, shorts, or YouTube Videos. There are a ton of settings you can change manually on the mic for sound control. The range is spectacular and the battery seems to last forever.

ZOOM H6 Recorder

This audio recorder is perfect for field audio as well as acting as a mixer for plugging in external microphones while shooting. I used this primarily to record directly from the DJ audio at weddings.

Rode VideoMic Go II

My run-and-gun on camera mic for shooting handheld footage. The quality is great and the ability to program the mic from your computer before going out to shoot is an added bonus and can help achieve higher quality audio recording.

Accessories:

Lowepro Whistler Backpack Camera Bag

Of course I have to include the bag in "Gear Bag" this pack supports attachment of heavy equipment like skis, axes and tripod along with all weather AW Cover protects gear from rain, snow, dust and sand. This is a HUGE backpack and fits most of my gear and my drone. This is not a street photo bag, but a TRAVEL bag. Made for the outdoors.

EXTRAS:

SanDisk 128GB SD Card

NEEWER 67mm 5-in-1 Magnetic Lens Filter Kit

RAUBAY 70.8" Professional Heavy Duty Video Camera Tripod

Neewer 43 Inch/110 Centimeter Light Reflector

PROfezzion 48 Slots Universal Weatherproof Memory Card Carrying Case
